Council Approves Funding for Liberty Day Fireworks

The June 27 Liberty Day celebration will be a bit more festive after the Cave Spring City Council approved additional funding for the fireworks display. The $3,000 contribution, which was unanimously approved during the June 9 council meeting, will come from the hotel/motel tax fund. The Downtown Development Authority had already committed $5,000 to purchase fireworks.

In other business during Tuesday night’s meeting, the council:

  • Heard plans for a proposed truck stop/convenience store on Gadsden Highway. No action was taken as no application has been submitted yet.
  • Approved minutes from the May 12, May 26, and June 2 meetings.
  • Approved a billing adjustment related to fees incurred due to damage caused by a contractor.
  • Had a first reading for the 2026-2027 budget. A called meeting for the second reading of the budget will be held on Tuesday, June 23, at 6 p.m.
  • Tabled a subdivision request due to the need for additional review related to water and fire services.
  • Discussed an amendment to the Bureau Veritas contract. No action was taken.

Council also met in executive session to discuss potential litigation. No action was taken.

Though I cannot vote on anything until next month, I want to keep you informed about what is happening with your city government. Tonight’s work session and regular meeting covered a lot of ground. Rather than running through every agenda item, here are a few highlights. Work Session Motel update - According to City Manager Nick McLemore, renovations on the motel are moving forward.  Lights on city hall property - The city is going to ensure that the parking lot and sidewalks are adequately lit. Sewer project - Work is wrapping up and the contractors are going through some final testing and punch-list items.  Police equipment - Chief Lacey brought a request before council regarding new equipment for the police department including pistols, shotguns, shotgun racks, body cameras, radar units, a computer and software.
