Fincher Property Discussion, Ordinance Second Reading on May 26 Called Meeting Agenda

The Cave Spring City Council will meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26. The agenda includes a second reading of the truck stop and convenience store ordinance as well as a discussion about the city’s 123 Fincher Street property. Other upcoming city council meetings include: June 2 at 5 p.m. - work session June 9 at 6 p.m. - council meeting June 23 at 6 p.m. - special called meeting/budget second reading Agendas for each will be posted on the city website prior to the meeting. Council Approves Sam Stewart Drive, Heritage Circle Name Changes

Council unanimously approved a motion by Councilman Charles Jackson to rename Stewart Circle to Heritage Circle and rename Fire Station Lane to Sam Stewart Drive. As part of the motion, council also approved getting a new sign made to mark the fact the fire station is named for Sam Stewart. A sign installation ceremony will be held as well. I recently spoke with one of Sam Stewart’s family members to get feedback on the proposed renaming. The family member expressed her support and said Sam Stewart was dedicated to the fire department. She said it means a lot to have his name attached to the department he loved. In other business at the May 12, 2026, regular meeting, council unanimously approved: A 14-day extension of the truck stop moratorium. Council to Vote on Stewart Circle Renaming, Extension of Truck Stop Moratorium

The Cave Spring City Council will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 6 p.m. to consider several items including a proposal to rename Stewart Circle to Heritage Circle and the driveway next to the fire station as Sam Stewart Drive. Stewart family members have expressed their support for the renaming. Other items on the agenda include an extension of the truck stop moratorium and fencing around the old water tank above the cave. Stewart Circle Renaming, Truck Stop Moratorium Set for May 12 Vote

The Cave Spring City Council is expected to vote on May 12, 2026, regarding whether to rename Stewart Circle to Heritage Circle and the driveway next to the fire station as Sam Stewart Drive. Council members were informed that Stewart family members support the proposal. Council is also expected to consider extending a truck stop moratorium, as the current measure is set to expire before a proposed ordinance can be finalized. The ordinance, introduced by Chairman Dennis Shoaf, would regulate the application process, location, and conditions under which a truck stop could be constructed. Other items discussed during the work session included: Proposed Local Maintenance Improvement Grant (LMIG) projects for David Drive ($32,752.98) and Hershell Mize Drive ($23,048.39); Repairs to the manhole downtown. [UPDATED] Truck Stop Ordinance, Manhole Project on Work Session Agenda

The Cave Spring City Council will meet for a work session on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. Items on the agenda include the manhole repair project at the traffic light, the water project and a truck stop ordinance proposed by Chairman Dennis Shoaf.  The purpose of the truck stop ordinance as listed in the draft ordinance is “To establish a truck stop/high-intensity fueling overlay district; to impose location, design, operational, environmental, and buffering standards; to provide for grandfather protection of existing facilities; to establish a conditional use permit process; and for other purposes.” The updated work session agenda is listed below. Walker Appointed as Cave Spring City Manager, Event Ordinance Fails

The Cave Spring City Council voted to appoint Stephen Walker as the new city manager during the Tuesday, April 14, council meeting. Walker holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of West Georgia and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Political Science from the University of Georgia. His most recent position was as assistant director for the Polk County Board of Elections. I look forward to working with Mr. Walker and wish him success in his new role. Event Ordinance Fails to Move Forward After months of work and review of a comprehensive event ordinance , the ordinance will not be moving forward because no one seconded my motion for a first reading. This is disappointing because a fair and impartial process would benefit the city and ensure public health and safety issues were adequately addressed. Council to Vote on New City Manager at April 14 Meeting

The Cave Spring City Council is expected to vote to extend an offer of employment to a new city manager during the Tuesday, April 14, council meeting. The search for a new city manager has been underway since late last year. Council is also expected to vote on several other items during the April 14 meeting including: A request to rename Stewart Circle. A $7,305 software requisition related to water meters. A $7,050 requisition for new water meters and the associated items. A key policy to govern the issuance and management of keys. A resolution related to the Certified City of Ethics program. A proclamation recognizing Georgia Cities Week. A proclamation recognizing Arbor Day 2026. A resolution to establish a schedule of fees and fines.
