Council Approves Sam Stewart Drive, Heritage Circle Name Changes

Council unanimously approved a motion by Councilman Charles Jackson to rename Stewart Circle to Heritage Circle and rename Fire Station Lane to Sam Stewart Drive. As part of the motion, council also approved getting a new sign made to mark the fact the fire station is named for Sam Stewart. A sign installation ceremony will be held as well.

I recently spoke with one of Sam Stewart’s family members to get feedback on the proposed renaming. The family member expressed her support and said Sam Stewart was dedicated to the fire department. She said it means a lot to have his name attached to the department he loved.

In other business at the May 12, 2026, regular meeting, council unanimously approved:

  • A 14-day extension of the truck stop moratorium.
  • The first reading of the truck stop ordinance proposed by Chairman Dennis Shoaf. The second reading will be held within 14 days at a called meeting, date and time as yet to be determined.
  • A request to spend up to $1,977.69 to help cover the cost of installing perimeter fencing around the old water tank above the cave.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Peggy Allgood, chair of Alton Holman Heritage Arts, Inc. (AHHAS) invited the community for coffee, doughnuts and a tour of ongoing AHHAS workshops on Thursday, June 18, at 10 a.m. The event is part of the organization’s 10th annual Heritage Arts Camp which will be held June 15-19 in the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church located at 30 Alabama Street in Cave Spring. Allgood described the event as an opportunity to observe our youngest citizens “learning how to learn for the rest of their lives.” The camp, which is run by volunteers, will also include a final reception and display of work on Friday, June 19, at 3:30 p.m. at the same location.
