The possible creation of a Planning and Zoning Commission is among the items expected to be discussed when the Cave Spring City Council meets for its Aug. 4 work session. A proposed ordinance would establish an advisory board to review planning, zoning and land use matters, and make recommendations to the council.
Under the current draft, the commission would consist of three voting members appointed by the city council. Final authority on legislative planning and zoning decisions would remain with the council. The draft ordinance is intended to serve as a starting point for discussion rather than a final proposal.
Council will revisit cemetery maintenance after learning last month that mowing costs for Cave Spring Cemetery could increase substantially. The city has requested quotes from qualified lawn care contractors to provide cemetery grounds maintenance. The deadline to submit a proposal is Aug. 3, 2026. City Manager Stephen Walker is expected to review the proposals with council during the work session.
Walker is also expected to provide an update regarding service disruptions and other issues with GFL, the City’s trash service provider. Walker and city staff have been working to keep residents informed of known issues by posting updates on the city’s website and Facebook page.
In other business, council is expected to receive an update on the city's water system improvement project, as well as an update on the Storybook Inn (formerly Creekside Motel) project. The agenda also includes an announcement concerning the city's new utility billing rates, recognition of new departmental certifications and an executive session to discuss a lease agreement.
The work session begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Cave Spring City Hall. The full agenda, as of July 31, is provided below.
